Getting the Velux Window in

The attic has what I believe was the housemaid’s bedroom and a sitting room for her. They are going to be our guest bedrooms — but to enable that they need to be a bit more livable.

At some point in the previous century, the landing had a small single bedroom with a very miserable roof light inserted. We, obviously, much do better.

Pushing the bounds of that into what remains of the landing and into the eaves makes what was a miserly single into an average double. The replacement of the light with a full blooded Velux — really the most expensive window of its type money can buy, alas — makes this into a really first class room with great views over the valley.

It was a hell of a weekend getting it in — first cutting out joists, reinforcing others, cutting out the boarding under the slates and asking good the gap where the old window was. Then of course getting the new frame in and re tiling to make us weatherproof.

It was a 10pm finish on Saturday and we didn’t finally get the window sealed with tiles on until 20 minutes after the torrential rain storm started on Sunday, but it was well worth it in the end. The window is now alligned with one below, and the front door.

This room just needs insulating, wiring, and plastering now. Dare a man dream?
